INSURANCE
Reimbursement for a psychologist in Europe depends on the nature of the mental health issues, whether an official diagnosis has been made, and the method of care provided. A significant portion of psychological care is covered by basic health insurance (Health Insurance Act), but specific conditions apply.

Reimbursement through basic health insurance:

With referral from a general practitioner: To be eligible for reimbursement, a referral from a physician (general practitioner, occupational health physician, or medical specialist) is required.

Acknowledged DSM-5 diagnosis: Reimbursement only applies to the treatment of a diagnosed mental disorder listed in the DSM-5 (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders).

Deductible: The costs of treatment are deducted from your mandatory own contribution (mostly 25 euro per session).

Not covered by basic health insurance: Treatments for conditions that are not considered an official mental disorder are not eligible for reimbursement.

Examples include: Adjustment disorders
Relationship issues
 Assistance with work related issues

More and more doctors and patients are meeting in online sessions: Instead of traveling to a practice, you connect with a licensed therapist via an internet-enabled device. We use the certified OpenTalk program for Europe and SVee for other countries. Using a secure system is essential to protect your personal data. Appointments are scheduled just like in traditional therapy, and sessions typically last 60 minutes.

The major advantage is convenience. Online therapy is often more convenient because there's no travel involved, and you can participate from home. This makes it easier to integrate into a busy schedule. No stress about going out, and you can relax with your own coffee or cigarette at your computer, laptop, or mobile phone.

Online therapy can improve access to psychological help, especially for people who live far from a therapist or have limited mobility. Some people also find it easier to begin therapy online because it reduces the stigma associated with visiting a psychotherapist.

Things to consider: You will need a private and confidential space for your sessions. The effectiveness of online therapy is continuously being researched. However, current findings suggest that it can be just as helpful as in-person therapy for many conditions. Some forms of therapy that require personal interaction, such as play therapy, may not be available online.

  • Remote sessions: Instead of traveling to an office, you connect with a licensed therapist through a device with an internet connection.
  • Communication methods: Sessions can take place via real-time video conferencing, phone calls, or even through text-based communication like email or chat.
  • Scheduling: Appointments are scheduled just like traditional therapy, and sessions are typically 50 to 60 minutes long.
  • Convenience: Online therapy is often more convenient as it removes the need for travel and can be accessed from your home, making it easier to fit into a busy schedule.
  • Accessibility: It can make mental health services more accessible, especially for those who live far from a provider or who have mobility issues.
  • Overcoming stigma: Some people find it easier to start therapy online because it reduce privacy concerns.
  • Some types of therapy that require in-person interaction, such as play therapy, may not be available online.
  • The effectiveness of online therapy is being continually studied, but current evidence suggests it can be just as helpful as in-person sessions for many conditions.
